The emergence of a parliamentary system and the increase in people's influence

At the beginning of the epoch of the Netherlands part of citizens and steam engines was the Batavian Republic. This Republic was ruled by the State Government. This was a group of people of 12 people. Also had the Batavian Republic 35 ministers. They were all democratically elected. But in this period had only a very small portion of the people.

However, this form of Government already called a parliamentary democracy. Despite the fact that few citizens have the right to vote, was the legislature be chosen by them. The actual power was so basically at the citizens. They chose Parliament.

When William I of Orange-Nassau in 1815 King was changed quite a lot. Netherlands was called the United Kingdom of the Netherlands now. The current Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg fell below. Netherlands was the past 9 years has been in the hands of the French. But the Russians had together with the Prussians, Austrians and Sweden the French army defeated at Leipzig. France now had to many areas that they had ever conquered. This they did.

Netherlands got a new Parliament and a Constitution. This was an important moment in history. The estates General consisted of two rooms. We call these rooms the first room and the second room. Together is this Parliament. The House of representatives met about new laws and taxes. From 1815 should this not more behind closed doors. This enabled the citizens to keep an eye on whether they really were well represented in the Parliament.

The first Constitution gave the King very much power. For example, the first room the King should choose. The provinces chose the members of the lower House. The people, however, was not honestly represented in the second Chamber. The second Room counted 110 members. 55 were chosen by the citizens of the northern provinces. The other 55 were chosen by the citizens of the southern provinces. But many more people lived in the South than in the North. The citizens in the North had more power than the citizens in the South.

It was only in 1848 came the people rose against the unfair Constitution. King William II gave command to create a new Constitution. Thanks to this new Constitution the King was no longer the Chief driver. There was also a possibility come to new elections. This was an important step in the history. Freedom of expression was now enshrined in the Constitution. Also got the people freedom of education and printing press.

At the end of this epoch are the first political parties formed. Only from the end of the years 1860 gave meaning to the various political currents. From these different currents eventually grew the various parties. These parties had first got any candidates. To 1896 you could on everyone votes. It turned out to be more convenient, however, as people become first candidate for the elections.
